need help with poor performance

  • #1 danks

    My current desktop build:

    intel core i5 cpu @ 2.67GHz

    16GB ddr3 ram  (lol overkill I know)

    geforce gtx 550 ti

    msi p55-cd53

I get about 6 fps on a good day.  Flashpoints and warzones are more or less unplayable.  I just bought and installed the new graphics card and the ram hoping it would help, but  I honestly don't notice any improvement in performance.  I'm positive all of my drivers are up to date and all that good stuff.  What I'm thinking now is that my cpu is completly bottlenecking my system.  Does that sound right?  I've looked into upgrading but my mobo is socket 1156 LGA and the i5 2500k that everyone loves only works on the newer 1155 LGA socket.  I'm also not sure I know enough to replace my mobo.  Any suggestions/advice/help?  Thanks!

I'd strongly recommend doing a "repair" of your installation (press the cog wheel after you have logged in via the launcher).  I saw a radical improvement in performance after doing this on my low-ish end machine.  Alderaan and Dromund Kaas were previously almost unplayable (had to turn camera to look directly down from overhead in order to be able to move in some parts of the zone) and now are actually quite smooth.   It also reduced the amount of time that it took to load a zone by about 50%.

Probably not the cure of all ills, but it is worth 15 min of your time to give it a shot.

Hmm tried the repair but no luck.  I'm gonna try reinstalling I guess.

Still no change...  anyone have any other ideas?

My go-to on troubleshooting this kind of thing, given that you've explored the major software conflicts, is overheating. Put your eyes on your CPU and GPU, are they clean?  Download a program called CPUID Hardware Monitor, it'll give you almost too much info about your thermals and fan speeds.

Defragment your drive. Yeah, I'm starting to sound like a Tech Support 1 phone jockey, but sometimes (read: rarely), this is a solution.

Are you infected? If you are, some protection softwares will be hard to install. I've found a good place to start is with IObit Malware Fighter and Advanced SystemCare. Both are free for home use.

I'd still put my money on heat. This game has some coding problems and runs hot. Just google that and see how many people have blown up their machines playing SWTOR.

    Good luck!

I do have CPU-Z installed which I think is CPUID as well?  How would I know if my system is overheating?  I have had swtor crash a few times for no reason and my computer has shut off a few times out of the blue.  I'm actually surprised I hadn't thought of this before.  The inside of my cash is certainly not clean, a decent amount of dust/hair buildup so I guess I could start there.

Would completely wiping my drives and reinstalling everything make sense here?

Since your computer is shutting off suddenly and you've confirmed that there is a decent amount of dust/hair buildup - that makes me believe even more that your problem is heat.  The good news is, if I'm right, you should be able to remove a lot of that debris and have a dramatically improved experience. Take care to ground yourself though, before puting your hands near the inside of your pc (I don't know your experience so I'm just covering the bases here).  A good way to ground yourself is to make sure you have skin contact on a metal part of your case before you put a hand inside. Static discharge is bad and tingles your fingers. :)

If I'm wrong and it is truly a software issue, and reinstalling the game didn't work, then starting over with your OS and other software would likely be a solution. A chore, but a solution. :)  Then again, having to fix a lot of things that can go wrong with any machine can be a chore.

I meant to check back earlier but I got tackled with work.
