I used to play mmos competitively, for pvp only, and I hated the whole PvE thing.. But, I'm done with that now, PvP annoys me too now, and I am not into the MMO scene at all. Every community is really unhealthy now and it drives me nuts; too many trolls, kids, asshats, and bad players on the internet now.
Anyway, rant asside, I love bioware games, and I just recently beat kotor and kotor 2 and I have nothing to play, and I was thinking about playing swtor exclusively for the character story.. is this worth it, or is it more of a shallow mmo-esque worthless filler story? What I mean by that is, does my story take a substantial path and affect my game with decisions, dialogue, and depth or is it more like "kill dem frogs. colect 10 rocks"?
Also, I heard that FTP swtor is pathetic, with no sprint or fast travel and you are insanely crippled. Is this true? is it enjoyable from a solo story perspective? I am a preferred player, if this affects things (idk why.. perhaps because I was in beta?)
I'd say it's worth it. I love the game personally and my experience with group quests has not been great, I get noobs to just try to storm their way in instead of doing their battle role, people who loot everything even if they don't need it, but that's mostly because they are noobs and have no idea what they are doing. But the good side is to great, I like the game play, I am usually a 3rd person action adventure game player I configure other MMOs, such as age of conan, so that I can play with a controller, this game I am enjoying with mouse and keyboard, I configured a controller but it's not worth it, I like the game how it is. Story wise, you have 8 great story lines, one for each class, and 8 different ways of playing (since each class has 2 subclasses but they are equivalents between empire and republic), I am enjoying all stories so far, but I have yet to finish one. You may end up having to play some group quests to get better gear to make your live easier doing your own quests, but that is not mandatory. So far I'd say that if I could only play one game I would choose this game, but that may be influenced by me loving the whole star universe and playing this game makes me escape reality and feel like I am in a galaxy far far away.
The story portion of this game is where the majority of the focus went into when they developed it. There are 8 class story lines that each are fairly well written, and even though pretty much everything turns out the same at the end there are some small divergences that can be made within your story for titles or alignment that really have no impact on the game world outside of your story.
As for whether it's worth it, the game is free to play so the only cost is the time and hdd space to download and install the game. Free is usually worth it.
The F2P restrictions are pretty ludicrous for the lowest level of it, but at preferred status the game is fairly playable. You'll still have restrictions and it'll take you a little longer to go long distances than subscribers, but you won't be crippled.
if you just want to play through it for the story, then this is essentially 8 great games in one. The annoying part is the side and planetary quests, as if you don't PVP and have all the capable boosts, you have to do them to level and they are always the same. But I've completed 6 of the 8 stories, and am on the last planet now for #7, and have enjoyed them all. Can't speak to the preferred player downfalls though since I've subbed since launch, but definitely worth playing if you enjoyed KOTOR 1 & 2.
