If all you have is a guy who's really hard to kill running around tickling people, as tanks often are in other MMOs, then there is no role in PvP for a tank.
Tanks need two general things to be effective in PvP (outside of high mitigation which makes them a tank.)
1. The ability to protect allies - This should come in various forms
-Peeling enemies through CC
-Friendly Damage mitigation (gaurd)
-Buffs, auras, shields
-Debuffs and enemy damage mitigation (taunt)
These type of mechanics make tanks have similar strength to healers. Instead of increasing actual HP they're increasing effective HP, etc.
2. Damage potential over time
Burst damage is not something that goes well with tanking. However, tanks should present a damage threat. The way to accomplish this is to increase the threat presented by the tank over time. This will prevent tanks from being completely ignored.
-Persistent Damage auras
The tank becomes more powerful as the fight goes on. The longer you ignore him the more he will punish you.
Another side to this is what I discussed in number 1. Both of these concepts synergize really well. The more damage you absord for your DPS, the longer they live, the more DPS they do. This effectively increases the threat a tank provides.

Thanks for the feedback guys. It was a conscious decision on my part to not go into the Great Hunt. It's part of Fatal Alliance, but it's also a big part of the Bounty Hunter class story which I didn't want to get into that at this point. It's a fine line with spoilers, whether it's publicly available or not.Posted in: Feature
@DarthShnooky The point on the weapon and armor modifications is a good one. I may look into exploring that in a future piece.
Again, appreciate the feedback.

Large scale PvP in MMO's offers a unique gameplay experience you cannot get anywhere else. Some games offer a lot of players battling at once, but they do not require the level of strategic thought and planning MMO's do. Small scale is still crazy fun, but nothing (literally) can compare to large scale MMO PvP.Posted in: Endgame PvP

Posted in: General DiscussionQuote fromPax was pretty awesome, it has to be said - despite spending a little longer in queues than I had hoped. Like I said in an earlier post, thanks for all your hard work - meaning all those Q&A sessions and space flight walkthroughs I missed while stood 10 feet away, I was able to catch on here the same night.
I saw first hand just how hard you guys work, speaking with Baelor, Kuuga, Thergood and Pete on Sunday - special shout out to Baelor with his magic thumbs - he took down the whole Q&A with Daniel Erickson and James Ohlen on his android before emailing it to Sado (who was definitely here in spirit) for posting on the site! You guys totally rock, see you on vent soon!
It was great talking with you and I'm glad to hear you enjoyed Pax. Baelor was definitely the "MVH" (Most Valuable Hater) of the show. I'm surprised he didn't wear out the keyboard on his phone between live-blogging a bunch of presentations, organizing the team through text messages, and posting twitter updates.

Posted in: Bounty HunterQuote fromQuote fromIf Bioware said only the Smuggler will have space combat as part of a feature that allows them to transport/smuggle goods around, how would you have felt?
I would sign that petition. :)
I would give up space combat in a heartbeat if it meant that bounties were BH specific.
In all seriousness, I'll tell you how I would have felt about that. I would have thought "man, I can't wait to roll a Smuggler and fly around in space. I'll do that right after I roll my BH to Bounty Hunt." In fact, I already feel that way about a lot of the classes. The cover mechanic is a good real world example. I definitely want to check that out and my thoughts are not "the Bounty Hunter should have that because I like Bounty Hunters," or "that shouldn't be in the game because Bounty Hunters can't use it." My thought is "I'm going to roll a Smuggler or IA at some point so I can use the cover system."

I think this would be great for Arena's. Warzones, (battleground instaces) I'm not so sure on. Just because of the amount of players that will participate and diversity of their relative skill levels. Of course, you'll always have open world PvP outside of a matchmaking system as well.Posted in: Endgame PvP
Time would have to be a big consideration in any matchmaking system. The longer you waited for a match the wider the range of matches should be, and it should widen pretty quickly. No one wants to wait an hour just to find a team of 4 that exactly matches their skill level. You also have to consider how many arena teams would be queued up at the same time. Will there be 100's of different teams to match you with? Or will there be tens of teams. If there are tens of teams then a matchmaking system may be unnecessary. This is all stuff that can be worked out in the mechanic details though.
League of Legends has a really great matchmaking system - http://www.leagueoflegends.com/learn/gameplay/matchmaking. Although, it's not perfect and you'll never get perfect.

In the presentation from Pax they confirmed that the piece of video, that started this speculation, was the warzone on Alderaan. Jump to 30 seconds in to part 6 of the videos DH has posted.Posted in: General Discussion
"And of course we have revealed some of the details about our player versus player warzones. First one is on the planet Alderaan, where we cut you off very ruthlessly, there on the planet Alderaan"
Basically referring to the portion of the video where the two player groups were about to attack each other and the video cut off. Alderaan is mentioned in the lead up to that particular clip as well. So these PvPvE encounters will be instances and they will probably have to have a queueing system.

There's no way to make every class exactly equal in every way without them actually being the same class. Even then you'll have complaints between AC's. What's the difference between BH's getting bounties and SI's or JC's being able to farm using AoE's?Posted in: Bounty Hunter
I think it's kinda the whole point of this game that the stories and classes have unique aspects. BioWare has said many times "if you want to live the 'X' fantasy, then you should pick 'X' class." Well, if every class is practically the same and has access to the same stuff (or is LIMITED to the same stuff) then what does it matter what class you pick? You can see this reinforced in the limiting of species, limiting of lightsaber use, etc.
If you want to dual wield lightsabers, roll a Marauder. If you want a dual bladed, roll a Shadow. If you want to Bounty Hunt, roll a Bounty Hunter.

Every time a convention or a reveal rolls around I hope for PvP and/or high level game play. So, I don't know what I think the reveal will be. What I want it to be is always the same. PVP AND/OR HIGH LEVEL GAME PLAY!!!!!Posted in: General Discussion
