Friday Update: Fan Friday, Eurogamer Expo Video, and CE Unboxing

Today brings us a three part Friday update for Star Wars: the Old Republic. The first part is a Fan Friday, complete with some great fan-created-art, concept art detailing capital ships and environments, and new wallpapers from the "Return" cinematic, as well as brand new weapon-themed forum icons.

The second part is a video of highlights from Eurogamer Expo, featuring some Darth Hater staff as well as documentation of the announcement of the release date and of course a number of fan reactions to playing the game.

The third section of today's update is an unboxing of the Collector's Edition, which goes through the box and shows all of the items that will be in it, as well as some animations of the in-game items and footage of the elusive Collector's Edition store. No footage of what's actually for sale yet, sadly.

Eurogamer Expo 2011: Chris Collins Interview

After catching up with Daniel Erickson and Stephen Reid (twice) at Eurogamer Expo, it dawned on us that we never formally interviewed Chris Collins, Star Wars: The Old Republic's head community honcho in Europe. Since the game hits certain European regions on December 22, 2011, we couldn't avoid him any longer and it was time to talk getting Haters overseas involved in game testing.

For people that missed your introduction, can you elaborate on your hiring, your position at BioWare, and your past experience?

Chris Collins: I am the European Community Manager, so I am based in BioWare Ireland. And over in the Ireland studio we are building a team of European community representatives. Some may already know Tony Marino, who works on the French boards. We just hired Lars Malcharek, and I am sure you met if you are on the forums for the German side of things. They are sort of building the teams to help support the local language players to make sure that they get everything that they need.

We recorded a full 20 minute play-through of the Huttball Warzone at Eurogamer Expo with a Jedi Sage character piloted by our very own Dover. The embed of the full high definition video is available after the jump, and Snodge chimes in throughout to offer some funny British commentary of Dover's actions in game.

As with all dissections, we will not reference prior dissection content mentioned in past dissections unless otherwise important. SWTOR Release Date Announced at Eurogamer

BREAKING: BioWare announced December 20, 2011 for US and December 22 for EU as release date for Star Wars: The Old Republic.

BioWare co-founders Dr. Ray Muzyka and Dr. Greg Zeschuk made the announcement during their keynote address at Eurogamer Expo in London, UK. Dr. Muzyka said this of the announcement:
This is an incredible moment for everyone at BioWare and our partners at LucasArts who have dedicated their lives to build this extraordinary game. We appreciate the patience from the millions of fans who have been waiting for the games release.

In addition to the release date, BioWare also announced the subscription pricing. Read after the break for the full announcement from the official site.

Darth Hater is at this year's Eurogamer Expo in full force with our in-depth coverage of everything related to Star Wars: The Old Republic. If you are attending, remember to look for the Darth Hater shirts to identify the team on the show floor and all other events throughout the convention. If you manage to get your hands on the game in any of the sessions, please share your commentary and thoughts with the rest of the Hater community on our official thread. Make sure to watch this post for content coming in throughout the week.

Note: Early entry ticket holders will be able to enter the show an hour earlier at 10AM BST (2AM PDT).

Current Schedule

Thursday
- Floor Hours: 11AM - 7PM BST (3AM - 11AM PDT)
- Day 1 Teaser - Day one is underway at the Eurogamer Expo in London, and as usual, Darth Hater is out in force to cover Star Wars: The Old Republic. It is uncertain how much new information will be gleamed from the convention - seeing as BioWare is showing basically the same content as Gamescom - but UK gamers are finally getting another chance for hands on. Even better for the Brits, we heard that this first day of the Expo only has five thousand or so attendees, making the lines much shorter then most previous conventions. The SWTOR booth in particular is moving very quickly, with lines as short as 40 minutes for the twenty minute demo.
Friday
- Floor Hours: 11AM - 7PM BST (3AM - 11AM PDT)
- Day 2 Teaser: Its day two of the Eurogamer Expo in London and we are already off to a rousing start. While the traffic was once again initially slow, the crowd quickly increased with the hall becoming more and more packed by the minute. The morning saw a series of origin world play at the Star Wars: The Old Republic booth but the gears shifted to Huttball at noon. I (Dover) spent some time at the helm, leading my(his) team to victory over the Rockworms, but its probably just beginners luck. Daniel Erickson and Rob Chestney joined the BioWare crew on deck with more folks coming out of the woodwork each time you turn around. Its really turning into a big show for BioWare in Britain.

Friday Update: Studio Insider, Eurogamer, Community Q&A

Today's Friday Update features a Studio Insider on combat animation. Principal Lead Animator Mark How discusses the process of creating combat animations, from conception to finished product. He explains what it is like to recreate epic battles between Jedi and Sith, and how Smugglers and Imperial Agents utilize complex tactical attacks to hold their own against opponents from the safety of cover.

Also featured in this week's update is the Community Q&A. This month, Lead PvP Designer Gabe Ametangelo answers questions about player versus player combat, with topics ranging from arena implementation to post-launch dual specializations.

The topic for next month's Q&A is Socialization in Star Wars: The Old Republic. Production Coordinator Courtney Woods posted a new Community Q&A thread, where members of the community can sound off for a chance to have their questions answered in a future Studio Insider.

Lastly, BioWare will attend EuroGamer Expo in London next weekend. You can read about their upcoming show here. Darth Hater will be there in full force so expect content coming from us straight from the event.
