On the outside, Star Wars: The Old Republic may seem like a traditional good versus evil conflict between the Republic and the Empire. But much like an office environment, there are many more factions, relationships, traditions and passive-aggressive memos involved in the grand scheme of things. Let’s take a look at some of the potential conflicts one may find during the Old Republic era.

Friday Update: Planet Quesh

Today's Star Wars: The Old Republic update brings us the poison-laced planet Quesh, and includes both a holonet entry and a video. For those still counting, the announcement of Quesh means this is the 17th confirmed planet. Info on the Holonet pages suggests the possibility of lots of inter-faction conflict, including a group of Republic-aligned Hutts, as Republic and Empire vie for control of the rare adrenal chemicals found on the planet. You can find images of Quesh by using the media gallery below. Dev tracker post and Aurebesh Translation are contained after the jump. -
Bestiary: A Guide to the World of Star Wars: The Old Republic
A few months back we compiled a list of creatures seen in the Star Wars: The Old Republic marketing. As more information was released, this list became out of date and in need of a drastic overhaul. With the addition of the Inhabitants section to the HoloNet, we felt now was a good time to take a second look at who or what we may encounter in TOR.

Friday Update: Nar Shaddaa
This week's Star Wars : The Old Republic update is a planet update in the form of Nar Shaddaa: Circling the planet Hutta is its largest moon Nar Shaddaa, the ultimate corrupt city. Dominated by underworld concerns and owned by the Hutts, this sprawling mass of skyscrapers is considered one of the most dangerous and exciting places in the galaxy, where anything can be had for the right price.
Access the HoloNet to learn more about Nar Shaddaa. Check out this video to see the endless city that covers the moon's landscape. Also, don't forget to visit the media section for never-before-seen screenshots, concept art, and wallpapers showing this capital of illegal commerce.
Also included in this week's update is a new issue of Blood of the Empire and information on the Threat of Peace in print. Working Dissection and decoded Aurebesh after the jump. -
Faction Lore: Hutts
Politics play an integral role throughout the Star Wars universe. We recently took a close look at the Mandalorians, one of the minor factions players may encounter in Star Wars: The Old Republic. This week we are looking at a faction that is very different from the honor-bound warriors: the eternally criminal Hutts.

The Old Republic: Smuggler's Vanguard
The official Star Wars website posted an original short story today by Rob Chestney entitled Smuggler's Vanguard. Rob Chestney previously brought us the Threat of Peace webcomic. The story focuses on Hylo Visz, a Mirialan smuggler known to us from the timeline series as the leader of the smuggler fleet that broke the Mandalorian Blockade.
There are many interesting references in the story. Planets referenced include Corellia, Talus, and Nal Hutta, as well as Hutta's moon, Nar Shaddaa. Hylo's ship is called the Crimson Fleece, and the supporting characters include a Nikto named Musk, Barrga the Hutt, and an unnamed Weequay.
The story contains a mix of action and subterfuge and fits the concept of the Smuggler to a tee. For more details, follow the link to the full story below. Hat tip to Jedidsm on the heads up. -
Auctioneer
I have seen some speculation on who would run the auction houses. In World of Warcraft everyone can remember how the goblins were in charge of the neutral auction houses. One of the popular choices for Star Wars: The Old Republic is the lowly Jawa. I just don't see these sand junk dealers from a backwater planet being able to manage an interplanetary market system. When I thought about it I started to think that the Neimoidians of the Trade Federation would be a much better fit, because an organization based on interplanetary economics sounds much more capable of running a scheme this big. Only problem here is that the Trade Federation was founded 350BBY, so they are out too. -
Obese Jedi
Now that I have your attention with a title such as that I will now lose your attention. Midi-chlorians. Now that half of you have stopped reading I will continue with the main topic of the article. Will fat Jedi be stronger in the force than slim Jedi?
As some of you may know, Vader lost some of his connection to the force when he lost some body parts in Mustafar, making him weaker than Palpatine. That is because each cell contains midi-chlorians, increasing force sensitivity. By using the logic in reverse, a morbidly obese Vader would have more cells in his body, resulting in a higher midi-chlorian count. I could explain the Hutt Jedi, Beldorian.
Will being overweight be a benefit for us in Star Wars: The Old Republic? By being larger we will be slower, but would the force sensitivity cancel that out? Would it be the excuse Bioware gives us so we don't have to think about it? (By "we" it is likely just "me") Will it be possible for us to even make overweight characters? I'm mostly bringing this up because I made an overweight, male, Sullustan entertainer during my SWG trial. It didn't get me better tips, even when I danced without a shirt on. -
Masters of Hutta
Hutt, the word brings up memories of Jabba and all the fun that came with it. Giant space slugs that have a tendency to turn towards crime. In the past Kotor games we all saw these beings sitting around, often near swoop tracks. Now we will be going to their adopted home planet of Nal Hutta, the Glorious Jewel. Much like the overlords of the planet, it is a swampy and nasty place to go.
The main source of power for these creatures is an incredibly long lifespan. Hutts live over 1000 years and are considered children up to the age of 130 years.(Speaking of children, all Hutts could have babies as they had both male and female organs.) Hutts live on the philosophy that states that if something is out there to have, might as well belong to you. Because of this there are few morals within society and planets under their control are often filled with criminals, as well as their bounty hunter predators.
There is a very good chance you will run into these bloated slugs. We will walk on their home planet, enter their palaces, and screenshots have been made showing these guys. They will likely be quest givers as they are not very mobile making it difficult to imagine fighting them.
The only problem I have with these guys in the game (very minor) is the eye size. Unlike what everyone else seems to complain about (big hands, big lightsabers) this Hutt has tiny eyes. When you look at Jabba his eyes are huge. Of course this guy could have normal eyes and just a big mouth, adding to the list of over-sized things in the game.
Lets hope we will see more of our slug overlords soon. -
We Want You
(Pretend Space Uncle Sam is narrating this)
21,000 years ago our beloved Republic was founded. In this desperate hour all are called upon to assist in its defense. While we want all who are able to assist, we also want people to know what they fight for. The following explains why we fight and why we must survive.
Since the rediscovery of the Rakata by Revan, we have determined that the first founders of the Republic were able to travel thanks to the study of ancient Rakatan hyperdrives. With the union of systems a common language and currency were set for trade between many species. With the poor technology of the time, westward travel was difficult due to the density of stars at the galactic core, leaving eastward expansion. This conflicted with the Hutt Empire, yet the distaste for the Hutts drew many systems to our cause. Growth was fairly constant with small military conflicts, yet all was fairly stable for thousands of years.
3,000 years ago Dark times began for the Republic. A splinter faction within the Jedi order left the Republic to bring about the Hundred Years of Darkness. Durring this time horrid creatures were developed by these fallen Jedi, now known as Sith as they adopted the name from the beings they came to dominate.
1,000 years later the Great Hyperspace War commenced. Sith that had been in hiding had sinced revealed themselves and brought about an attack on the Jedi Order as well as the Republic. We managed to defeat these Sith and the leader Naga Sadow was forced into hiding on Yavin.
To thank the Jedi for their aid in the conflict, a mountain where a force nexus was located was given to the Jedi on Coruscant. On this mountain the Temple was built and was made the headquarters for the Jedi order until the recent events.
The Sith invaded again 300 years ago, just before the Mandalorian War. Exar Kun managed to lead the first attack on Coruscant since the founding of the Republic. While damaged, the Republic prevailed and pushed back these invaders. However, they would remain a constant threat to us all up to the present.
Following these wars were the Mandalorian War and Jedi Civil War. This recent history is still scarred in our memories. Our Republic is fragile, as we have lost many systems and our capital is in ruins. While this peace holds we rebuild and regroup, as the Sith can not be trusted to keep the peace. Come fight the good fight and help the Republic in its darkest hour. Join us
(Before anyone complains I will be doing one of these for the other side soon.)
