This week's Star Wars: The Old Republic Friday Update gives us the Jedi Consular progression video. The video features a female Mirialan, and showcases skills and armor from both of the Consular's advanced classes. In this video, a Jedi Shadow clad in armored robes showcases an in-combat stealth ability, as well as what appears to be a damage absorption skill. The Jedi Sage features high-powered telekinetic attacks and a resurrection ability, while favoring more elaborate robes.

Friday Update: Smuggler Character Progression, Developer Blog, and PAX Prime 2011 Highlights

This week's Star Wars: The Old Republic Friday Update is three-fold. First we have a progression video for the Smuggler, stuffed with all the violence and lopsided smiles we can handle. Then there is a developer blog from on The Old Republic's expanded universe told in the pages of several books and comics. Lastly, a PAX highlights video is available for anyone who couldn't attend the event.
The Smuggler progression video follows the same formula as its predecessors, and highlights the different combat paths a Smuggler can take. Whether the Scoundrel or the Gunslinger is your Advanced Class of choice, you will have a variety of looks and skills to choose from, and it includes a particular homage to everyone's favorite archaeological adventurer.
We were also treated to a new Developer Blog by Senior Writer Alexander Freed. In this installation, he focuses on the expanded universe of Star Wars: The Old Republic. Freed has some key insights on what goes into developing these expanded stories from his first-hand experience of writing two tie-in comics (Blood of the Empire and The Lost Suns). He also shares what fans can expect from future adventures set in this era.The first thing that any potential tie-in to Star Wars and The Old Republic should do is answer a series of questions: What does this story contribute to mythology of The Old Republic? What does a reader get from this story that changes the way he or she experiences the game? Does it give the reader a new perspective on a character? Does it explain a mystery that isnt resolved in the game? Does it explore the setting and the timeline in new depth?
Finally, we are treated to a video montage that highlights the PAX Prime event from two weeks ago.
But wait...there's more! A working dissection of the smuggler progression video is now available in the media gallery below. As with all dissections, we will not point out things we noted in prior dissections. More content for the dissection is coming throughout the day so make sure to check back at this post in the future.

Daniel Erickson on Questing
BioWare's Daniel Erickson took the time to respond to a poster's comment on the Official Forum about the Questing System in Star Wars: The Old Republic. In what could have been a small post with the standard tag line about Questing/Story in The Old Republic ended up being a lengthy explanation of the system in depth. --"What are all the different types of multiplayer quests?"
Whew, that one's a big list but I can hit the major stuff. 1) World Quests: One-offs or short chains built for easy pick up and play. Grab a PUG or your friends and have a short adventure together. 2) World Arcs: Epic quest arcs that go from four to ten quests or more and follow a storyline across an entire planet. Big decisions and branching questlines you may have to play multiple times (in different playthroughs, they're not repeatable) to see all the content. Built for long play sessions or a series of short sessions where you and your group want a huge adventure that may stretch over tens of hours. Also very PUGable as long as you're grabbing like minded folks. 3) Flashpoints: Instanced, heavily scripted major story and action pieces built for groups to go in and get the very best of BioWare's multiplayer storytelling. Built to be played in a single sitting.

Sometimes We're Wrong When We're Right
E3 revealed a great deal of exciting information on Star Wars: The Old Republic, from player ships to warzones. However, people couldn't help but hear the disappointment in my voice when I excitedly started to play the Sith Inquisitor, participated in the opening quest dialog, and proceeded to run smack into stationary Class Trainers. With this reveal in mind, I feel it is necessary to point out what we speculated in January as the ability gaining and leveling system for the classes -- with the exception of getting access to talent trees only after you selected your Advanced Class -- is WRONG! -
Interview: BioWare's Lead Concept Artist Arnie Jorgensen

Now we add to that list with BioWare's Lead Concept Artist Arnie Jorgensen. Read on to learn about concept art, as well as the loot and levels in Star Wars: The Old Republic. -
Dissected: E3 Content
Our dissection of the Star Wars: The Old Republic content released during E3 is now online. As in our prior dissections, we will add new content in as we find it, so keep checking back. Feel free to let us know if you notice something we missed, and we will be happy to add it to our dissection with credit. Note: If something is mentioned in a prior dissection, then we do not reiterate it again here. Low bandwidth users should note there are numerous images contained in this article. -
Damion Schubert on Balancing Group & Solo XP
A post from Star Wars: The Old Republic's Damion Schubert gave some insight on balancing XP gains for solo and group players: We increase the XP pool for each group member in it, and then divide that pool. I don't have the number in front of me, but its something we'll be tweaking as we play anyway.
The general gist is that we want to reward grouping, but not so much that grouping is the only way to play the game (something that is very easy to do if you tilt the table too much, and then balance the levelling curve to that rate gain). That being said, as some have mentioned, grouping with another person increases your killing efficiency and reduces your risk of death substantially, to the degree that being in a group of two is vastly more efficient than 2X killing efficiency (this is like most MMOs). Still, you want to reward grouping enough to help ensure that you overcome the friction associated with grouping (finding groupmates, getting to them, tolerating idiots, etc).
Other notes:- Yes, we have anti-twink measures. Yes, high level players get shut out if they kill creatures too far below them. This is a fine line - you want to let high level players help their new friends, but you really don't want high level players hunting in low level areas, as that can be disruptive to the lowbies.
- Yes, compared to other MMOs, we give you more XP for completing quests and less for killing creatures. These numbers will also likely be continually tweaked.
- Yes, harder things give more experience.

no one gets screwed, no one is forced to group and everyone is happy.
Balancing it's not that easy. Instead, you need to look at XP gain per hour. A group of 3 can kill (let's say) 5X the creatures than a solo player can in an hour, which means that if you give everyone the full XP value, grouping is 5X() more efficient than soloing. If you balance the curve to that, the solo player gets screwed.
In our curve, we push that towards being closer to 2-3X. Still a significant advantage, but the grouper has to deal with all of the inertia of forming a group. -
Charting a Path to Class Customization
As the news coming out of Austin continues to pick up speed, mining information is becoming much more exciting. The response to our recent speculation articles inspired us to delve deeper into what we were previously told about Star Wars: The Old Republic with surprising results. We used our recently acquired knowledge to give context to older news items, and realized BioWare was giving us hard facts all along.

PHAT LEWTZ
I am the kind of person who will analyze everything. When I watched the walkthrough video I was looking at every element on the screen and comparing it to other MMOs that I have already played. The most prominent in my mind would of course be World of Warcraft which I am currently still playing. In the walkthrough video I noticed that a Jedi dropped (you guessed it) loot that a Sith could actually carry.
