  • Friday Update: New Karpyshyn Novel

    • By Algiebba 4/22/2011 3:25:16 PM
    • Category IconSWTOR News

Today Star Wars: The Old Republic announced Drew Karpyshyn is authoring a new novel titled Revan. An in-depth interview with Karpyshyn is also available on the official site.

Q: In what ways will readers who have read Revan benefit when playing Star Wars: The Old Republic?

A: I think the novel will give them a much better understanding of the Sith Emperor and the Empire, for one thing. The Old Republic Sith Empire is very different from what people know from the movies, or even from the Great Hyperspace War comics that focus on characters like Naga Sadow and Ludo Kressh.

The novel will also give them some very direct background and detailed information that ties in directly with key Flashpoints in the game. I can't say too much, of course, but like any great prequel the books will give you the details of what came before to add an extra layer of depth to the experiences in the game
    .

As you might expect from the title, the main character of the forthcoming novel is Revan of the Knights of The Old Republic series. While that sets the novel some 300 years before the time of the game, Karpyshyn let us know that there will be some significant characters [in the novel] who appear in Star Wars: The Old Republic.

The book will be available "later this year," which surely bears some relationship to "soon." Hit the jump for the official announcement.

In other news, if you are in the Austin, TX area tomorrow, Austin Books & Comics is hosting a Star Wars Day featuring autograph sessions with Star Wars: The Old Republic comic authors Rob Chestney and Alexander Freed. Details about appearances from film stars and schedules available here.

  • Lore Update: Corellia

    • By Orionark 7/30/2010 12:23:14 AM
    • Category IconFeature
Corellia is conspicuously missing from the announced planets in Star Wars: The Old Republic, but its long, rich history, and pivotal role in many of the galaxy's political turning points make it a very strong candidate for a future reveal. Aside from serving as the galaxy's focal point for starship design, development and construction, Corellian natives were responsible for the initial Human discovery of the hyperdrive, and the planet is also included among the original founders of the Galactic Republic. The fascinating thing about Corellia and its brother planets is that none of them are native to Corell, the star they orbit around, having been dragged through hyperspace by Celestials using the nearby Centerpoint Station and placed into an artificial orbit. Read on to learn about Corellia's history and our reasons why we feel it will be revealed as a planet in The Old Republic.

  • Daniel Erickson & Rob Chestney On Peace For The Republic Timeline

    • By Zoid 4/16/2010 10:09:28 PM
    • Category IconSWTOR News
More yellow text appeared on the Developer Tracker today from both Daniel Erickson and Rob Chestney about "Peace for the Republic?", the latest Star Wars: The Old Republic HoloNet Timeline entry.

First, Rob Chestney explained how the events portrayed in Obsidian's Knights of the Old Republic 2 are relevant to Star Wars: The Old Republic, but were not covered withing the Timeline series:

Hey Folks, always nice to see the healthy debate sparked by the Timeline pieces. I love Star Wars history and particularly anything relating to KotOR. Even though KotOR 2 was developed by another developer, lots of folks at BioWare played and enjoyed it, including myself. If you look closely within the game, you will find several references to events or characters from KotOR 2, and we absolutely treat it as canon. I will also say that there have been discussions about the final fate of the Exile, who was indeed a woman according to the canon.

  • Threat of Peace on Sale Soon?

    • By emlaeh 4/8/2010 6:20:26 PM
    • Category IconSWTOR News
According to various booksellers taking pre-orders, the Dark Horse's Star Wars: The Old Republic Volume 1 - Threat of Peace is supposedly on sale starting May 5, 2010. However, BioWare originally announced on the official site the publish date would be in April, and of course, all dates are subject to change. The paperback authored by BioWare's Rob Chestney, art by Alex Sanchez, and colors by Michael Atiyeh will feature 96 pages and carries this description:

Offering an exclusive first look at the era of Star Wars: The Old Republic, written by one of the writers behind LucasArts and BioWare's wildly anticipated massive multiplayer online game, Threat of Peace unveils a galaxy on the brink of destruction three hundred years after the events of Knights of the Old Republic! For decades, the Galactic Republic and the Sith Empire have been at war - the Sith have gained control of the Outer Rim, but their efforts to penetrate the Core Worlds have so far been thwarted. Now, representatives from both sides attempt to negotiate a peace treaty - but deception by the Sith puts the Jedi in an unfortunate position. The release of The Old Republic promises to be a Star Wars event of the highest order, a game-changing moment that will mobilize legions of fans to explore a never-before-seen piece of the Star Wars mythology. The story in this volume reveals the era for the first time, and is followed by bonus behind-the-scenes content found nowhere else!

Yesterday, G4's Fresh Ink reported the new webcomic Blood of The Empire will debut later this month.

In addition to Star Wars: The Old Republic: Fatal Alliance by Sean Williams in July, swbooks.co.uk reported the second Star Wars: The Old Republic novel by Jack Kemp with what we think is a tentative or placeholder title of Star Wars: Stand-Alone 3.

  • Rob Chestney on Smuggler's Vanguard & Jedi Knight

    • By Zenkei 3/31/2010 1:26:48 AM
    • Category IconSWTOR News
We're definitely seeing a lot of posts from BioWare developers and writers lately. Today, Rob Chestney commented on a thread discussing Smuggler's Vanguard:

Thanks for all the encouraging feedback. I'm glad to see people like Hylo as much as I do. She's definitely become one of my favorite characters, and I hope to tell more of her story as time goes on. I'll be honest and say she's not one of the most prominent characters in the game (for that, see 'Biographies'), but part of what brings the Old Republic to life is that the writing team has fleshed out the back-stories of hundreds (if not thousands) of characters who will appear in the game, and taking even the minor characters to a high-level of detail is part of what we think makes a great BioWare story.

More from Rob Chestney, including his impression of the Jedi Knight, after the jump.

  • Friday Update: 'Biographies'

    • By Zoid 3/26/2010 1:30:30 PM
    • Category IconSWTOR News
A new Star Wars: The Old Republic HoloNet tab was revealed today: the Biographies section. It gives a background on various individuals such as Nemro the Hutt, Satele, and Grand Moff Kilran. Sean Dahlberg announced this while mentioning Rob Chestney's short story on starwars.com:

Curious about some of the characters you've seen in Threat of Peace, the Developer Walkthrough, or the Deceived cinematic trailer? Now you can find out all about them

We are thrilled to introduce a new expansion to our HoloNet archives: Biographies Now you can view profiles of several of the galaxy's most notable figures. Each entry highlights someone you may meet, travel with, or fight alongside or against as you help determine the future of the galaxy in Star Wars: The Old Republic

Just like the Classes, Planets, and Timelines sections, the Biographies archives will be expanded regularly, so check back often to make sure you get the latest updates.

He also hinted at updates prior to E3:
Biographies is the foundation for something more... what exactly that is, I can't tell you quite yet. All I can say at this time is stay tuned; E3 2010 isn't that far away and we actually have some exciting (and new) updates for you before then.

Those following Star Wars: The Old Republic may recognize Grand Moff Kilran from the Sith Warrior Flashpoint dialog sequence, Satele Shan from Threat of Peace webcomic, and Nem'ro the Hutt from the Bounty Hunter demonstration on Hutta.

Aurebesh translations and newsletter hints after the jump. (Thanks to RogueJedi86 for the translation.)

  • Dissection of Threat of Peace

A few months ago we got a not-so-subtle tip from Rob Chestney that the Threat of Peace webcomic is an important asset for internet detectives following Star Wars: The Old Republic. For us here at Darth Hater, we see it as a relatively untapped well of gameplay and story information, possibly rivaling the Holonet. To this end we thought it might be a good idea to look at some of the more unusual or interesting clues that may be hidden in the art and story of the comic. Hit the jump for a fresh look at the Threat of Peace.

LucasArts and BioWare are forging a new Star Wars era of epic adventure with their forthcoming massively multiplayer online role-playing game, Star Wars: The Old Republic. Set more than 3,500 years in the past of the far-away galaxy, the game occurs in a time when the Jedi and the Galactic Republic clashed with the Sith Empire. It is an era rich with storytelling opportunities not only for players, but for fans of Star Wars literature.

Already, online fans are aware of Threat of Peace, the serialized web-comic written by BioWare's Rob Chestney. This April, Dark Horse Comics begins collecting the comic into a 96-page trade paperback, Star Wars: The Old Republic Volume 1: Threat of Peace, with art by Alex Sanchez, and colors by Michael Atiyeh.

Threat of Peace author Rob Chestney is also slated to write a new, original The Old Republic short story for online publication here at StarWars.com.

Next July, Del Rey Books will publish in hardcover Star Wars: The Old Republic: Fatal Alliance, a novel by bestselling author Sean Williams. Now in the early planning stages is a second novel set in the Old Republic time frame, written by Paul Kemp, author of the forthcoming Crosscurrent.

Darth Hater was recently invited out to LucasArts' home base in San Francisco to get a look at the newest class in Star Wars: The Old Republic, the Imperial Agent. During our time at the studio we got to ask Jake Neri a few questions and we also saw a live demo focusing on some of the combat abilities utilized by this Sith sniper. Throughout the event we hastily scribbled notes, attempting to get a real understanding of how the Imperial Agent works, and we came away with some interesting discoveries.

The Star Wars: The Old Republic official forums received a visit from Rob Chestney earlier today. The community was treated to some insider information about the comic, and possibly the game. While Rob does remind us that the following information does not officially confirm or deny any official stance, there are some interesting things to be gleamed in the following quotes.

I always love it when you guys pick up on stuff in the comic. I try to sneak in as many game content hints as I can. At least that way, whatever you may feel about the art or the story, there's still something there to make it worth reading.
