Darth Hater wraps up our coverage of San Diego Comic Con with our impressions of Star Wars: The Old Republic's Alderaan Warzone before we set our sights on Cologne, Germany for the annual Gamescom convention. We first encountered the Alderaan Warzone at the Fan Site Summit back in April. BioWare gave fans without access to San Diego Comic Con an opportunity to get in the thick of battle at BioWare Base, an offsite location within the Hilton Gaslamp, and we had Orionark, Mako, Infamous, and Misensus contribute their impressions of their PvP experiences. -
SDCC 2011: New Screenshots of Eternity Vault, Origin Worlds, and Esseles flashpoint
Having fared San Diego Comic-Con, new content is still coming in all the time. Part of the new content that is now available to us after SDCC are new screenshots from the event that show off the Eternity Vault, Origin Worlds, and the Esseles flashpoint. Even though you may have not been able to attend Comic-Con, these images should help moderate the feeling of "I should have gone," or possibly make it worse. Either way, enjoy the new screenshots. -
SDCC 2011: Darth Hater 'Join Us, It Is Your Destiny' Panel Video
Now that were back from San Diego Comic-Con, we were able to find some time to get our own video up of the Join Us, It Is Your Destiny' panel. Some of you might have seen it already on Gamespot or G4 but our own video gets a better angle/view of the abilities shown in the panel. We will work on dissection images to update the original gallery when we are able to find some time. For now though, the embed of our video follows the jump. Enjoy. -
SDCC 2011: Alexander Freed Interview on The Lost Suns

San Diego Comic-Con is officially over but there is plenty of content rolling out over the next week. In one of those pieces that is now available for consumption, we had the pleasure to interview Alexander Freed, Senior Writer on Star Wars: The Old Republic and writer on The Lost Suns. In the interview, Alexander Freed discusses the differences in writing for games versus comics, writing character stories, developing worlds in an established property, where the comics fit in relation to the game's timeline, and more. Hit the jump for the interview in full. -

SDCC 2011: Interview With Dallas Dickinson

Star Wars: The Old Republic's Dallas Dickinson, Director of Production, took time out of his San Diego Comic-Con schedule to speak with Darth Hater earlier today. Dickinson clarified and expanded some statements made during the panel and Q&A sessions so far, including aspects of personal transportation and companion customization.
What prompted the class design change from choosing a permanent Advanced Class to having the ability to switch?
Dallas Dickinson: I think we just decided that it is just such a significant choice that you make. We try to give you as much information as possible so you make a good one, but we know that there are some people who choose to play as a Juggernaut, play for three levels, and are like "aww man!" We want to make it so that the first time you choose to respec your Advanced Class, it is relatively painless; it is going to cost some credits, but it is not going to cost a ton. Though after that, we want to make it very difficult. We don't want people to hot swap their Advanced Class willy-nilly; we want to make sure it is something you don't do all the time.
How does your Light and Dark side points affect your combat and can you give some examples of this?
I can't give you examples. However, something we talked about all along is that as you progress very far down the light side path or very far down the Dark side path, you're actually going to unlock some abilities that are only available to that side of the Force. -

New Issue of Pro Tips: Dog Pile

It shouldn't be that hard to realize that for the vast majority of people, if you aren't tied down to one specific ability set in a game, you'll have a hard time only performing one role, and when multiple people perform multiple roles, things get a little confusing. BioWare harps on their nontraditional class structure, but is it really a leap forward in game design, or is it going to confuse players to the point of making them simply rush in and hope for the best? For good players this will never be the case, because cohesive groups can generally keep their stuff straight, but for the public and random groups out there, there's a very real chance things could get slimy.
In other news, we have something awesome prepared for any Pro Tips fans attending the San Diego Comic Con later this week. Steve will be there at his company's booth giving stuff away! Not just anything, mind you, but some limited edition, snazzy original Pro Tips sketches. These are pretty limited (around 20 or so), so if you really, really want one, head to the Cartoon Books booth (2109) on Friday from 12pm - 2pm (that's PST folks) and find Steve. He'll be wearing a shirt (perhaps a recognizable shirt) and some pants, maybe. That's all you get.

Friday Update: Studio Insider, Community Q&A and Final Comic-Con Details

This week's Star Wars: The Old Republic Friday Update a Studio Insider. Senior Video Editor Brian Arndt gives us insight at the process of making the opening cinematics for each of the character classes in this week's Studio Insider.Brian Arndt
Even when something is "final" at BioWare, its often not - not if it can be improved. Once we dropped the opening cinematics into the game, we opened a thread on the Game Testing forums to get feedback and suggestions. While the feedback was really positive overall, the testers had some interesting suggestions. Taking this feedback to heart, we went back to some of the scenes to add extra ships and to incorporate other tidbits. To illustrate, for the Sith Warrior intro, several people pointed out that the Star Destroyers in the background looked a little too static. So we animated and rendered out some new Star Destroyer models from the game. Some feedback we got was that the scene wasn't busy enough so Brandon inserted squadrons of Sith fighters, adding a new layer to the scene as a whole, and to drive it to be the highest quality we could.
The Community Q&A included with the Studio Insider is one on sound design with Senior Audio Artist Scott Morton. BioWare is also once again asking for questions for their next Community Q&A, this time on PVP.
Included as a separate update are the final details for next week's Comic-Con San Diego event.
