  • Damion Schubert On Obtaining Grade 7 Ship Parts

    • By Jaspor 12/13/2012 1:15:49 PM

Game Update 1.6 introduced new Heroic Space Missions and Tier 7 ship parts to help players complete these challenging missions. The prices to obtain these new ship parts are hundreds of Daily and Fleet Commendations. To the surprise of many players, these parts were also made available for purchase on the Cartel Market. Players have discussed this approach and debated whether the large discreprancy in costs between the two ways of obtaining the items is truly a step towards "pay to win" for SWTOR. Community Manager Joveth Gonzalez has posted some feedback from Lead Systems Designer Damion Schubert indicating that BioWare is looking for solutions to reduce the gap between the two paths:

    Damion Schubert

Unfortunately, there is, in fact, a great disparity between these two costs. We want to apologize for this, as there was a miscommunication internally on how valuable these upgrades were, how challenging they should be to earn, and how fast a player should be able to earn them.

We are currently looking at solutions that cause the least amount of frustration for all players affected, while keeping the integrity of both the Cartel Market and the game intact.

It is not our intent to make the Cartel Market the “way to play" the game—we want you to feel that both the Cartel Market and earning gear in game are viable options as far as value goes, neither being far more efficient or effective than the other.

We truly hope you enjoy the challenge of the new Heroic Space Missions and apologize again for what we hope is a small distraction.

I want to reiterate that we are actively looking at solutions and they will be communicated to you as soon as we have a solid plan.

  • Beating the Game Update 1.6 Space Missions with Grade 6 Ship Parts

With Game Update 1.6: Ancient Hypergate now on live servers, we thought it would be a great time to take a second look at the additions to Space Combat and put together a guide. If you have played any of the new missions you likely noticed how hard the missions are, almost seemingly gated to players with Grade 7 gear. Well, with enough prodding with Grade 6 ship parts I was able to beat every single one. How did I do it? Hit the jump to find out.

Note: While we cover only the Imperial side in this post, the Republic ones should be the same for the corresponding missions.

With Game Update 1.6 on the Public Test Server and on the way to live servers soon, BioWare detailed the new Space Combat Missions coming in the update to the community. While it may not contain much new information for those following Star Wars: The Old Republic closely, the post conveys the information in a concise manner.

    BioWare

These missions will be repeatable, incredibly challenging, and reward players who enjoy the current Space Missions. Our goal is to make these missions worthy of the most skilled players, and completing them, along with their Bonus Objectives, should test the greatest pilots. To help in this endeavor, players will also be able to get new upgrades for their ship, attainable through various means like trade skills and specialty vendors. The rewards for these missions will also be increased, and hopefully provide new motivations for players who want to improve their gear for use in Flashpoints and Operations.

Earlier today, BioWare fixed the Star Wars: The Old Republic Space Combat missions in Game Update 1.6 on the Public Test Server. With that, I was able to take a look at them and get a general idea of what to expect when the update goes live. After seeing the new missions firsthand, I can speak somewhat briefly on some of the key points. Consider these impressions somewhat incomplete as I was unable to finish any of the missions and unable to even attempt the Kabal Station Defense mission due to being ineligible. I will add more to this post as the situation evolves, but for now hit the jump and read my initial impressions.

Game Update 1.6: Ancient Hypergate is now on the Public Test Server for players to enjoy. As with all updates, the download will require considerable time depending on connection speed. For now, here are the highlights of what to expect in the new update.

    BioWare

Game Update 1.6: Ancient Hypergate is now on the Public Test Server (PTS) allowing players to experience brand new in-game content, including a new PvP Warzone and Heroic Space Missions.

    • Travel to a remote Warzone to discover a brand new PvP battle mechanic. The Republic and Imperial forces are locked in an intense conflict to control two energy pylons. Fight to take control of these powerful pylons and kill enemy forces to discharge energy into your faction’s gate. The first team to open their portal unleashes deadly reinforcements to wipe out enemy players. But beware, those who attempt to control these objective points may find them to be a bit volatile!
    • Take on the best pilots in the galaxy. Navigate your ship to victory in new LeveI 50+ Heroic Mode Space Missions! With six new repeatable Heroic Mode Missions per faction, these updated Space Missions will challenge even the most skilled pilots. Players will earn Black Hole Commendations to spend on ship upgrades, high level gear, and more!

For those of you that already have a character, we encourage you to explore Ancient Hypergate and Heroic Space Missions. For your convenience, all Warzone matches on PTS will automatically be set to Ancient Hypergate. Please give us your feedback by posting on thePublic Test Server forum. Unfortunately, we won’t be able to offer the ability to copy characters for this test. Be sure to visit the Star Wars™: The Old Republic™ Test Center to learn more.

For the post in full, hit the official site. We're in the process of getting on the PTS now, expect new content incoming to the site soon.

Now that BioWare has announced that Star Wars: The Old Republic will be going free to play, we can expect an influx of new players to the game. For some, it will be their first time playing. For others, this will be their first time playing an MMO. As it is a vast and complex title, playing can be daunting for any first timer. Therefore, instead of spending hours trying to explain the game’s various systems and intricacies and getting frustrated to the point of head butting your best friend, we have put together a primer for beginners detailing just that. If this is your first time traveling to a galaxy far, far away, hit the jump.

With the game now officially out, fans of Star Wars: The Old Republic will likely experience space combat for the first time. Some, if not most, will notice that there is currently no support for a gamepad natively through the client of the game. Luckily, Darth Hater has an answer to that very issue. Using JoyToKey along with the help of a tutorial on Instructables, we were able to create a configuration file that will allow players to use their Xbox 360 gamepad in Space Combat. To assist users in the setup process, we made a quick video along with a small text guide.

Hit the jump for the video and text tutorial.

Note: You will need the JoyToKey software, our config file (right click/save as), an Xbox 360 Controller, an Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver, and Windows for this to work.

  • Capital Idea: Guild Ships in SWTOR

Several months ago, we featured an op-ed on guild implementation in Star Wars: The Old Republic. In that article, we mentioned BioWare's interest in guild capital ships, while noting that such a unique feature would be unlikely to make it into the game by the launch date. Since then, we saw the addition of a guild page to the HoloNet, and received additional confirmation of developer interest in the idea of guild capital ships. This month, we are taking a closer look at the idea of guild capital ships and how they could be implemented in SWTOR.

    Stephen Reid

We're having a Saturday update; we got something going up tomorrow. I'm not going to spoil it but it is related to Taral V. I think people are going to like it; you're not going to have to work too hard to figure it out but it is something people have been asking for consistently for quite a long time.

No, it isn't a release date. But yeah, we're having an update tomorrow.

Working Dissection of the trailer is in the Media Gallery below. As with all dissections, we will not comment on stuff seen in prior videos. Make sure to keep checking out throughout the weekend for more content for the Dissection as we will add new content as we go. Official DevTracker post follows after the jump.

During Episode 10 of the Jace Hall Show, Space Combat is shown in action to fans of Star Wars: The Old Republic. This segment came at the end of the episode and was the teaser for Episode 11. It is implied that Episode 11 will feature more footage, possibly more of Space Combat. Along with the small teaser of Space Combat was an interview with Director of Production Dallas Dickinson and Marketing Director Leo Olebe from BioWare.

You can find images of the Space Combat segment by using the media gallery below. To watch the full episode visit IGN.

Update: Jace Hall Show Episode 11 is now online and showcases more of the Space Combat that the last episode teased. We uploaded a few screens to the media gallery for viewing but Space Combat deserves to be viewed in video form so make sure to watch the full episode via the link above. One notable thing was confirmed during the video - you can do a barrel roll by pressing the space bar (Leo Olebe). Thanks to Mako for the tip.

One of my earliest Star Wars memories involves chasing my best friend around the house with an original X-wing toy, somehow managing to miss her TIE fighter no matter how fervently I shouted "I got you!" This was almost certainly the genesis of my love of Star Wars space combat. My desire to blow up snub fighters and capital ships persisted throughout my early childhood and melded nicely with my passion for video games. This is why the space combat Comic Con announcement for Star Wars: The Old Republic brought a smile to my face. With the recent PC Action information and PC Gamer leaks in mind, I thought it would be a good idea to look back at some of the ways we see Star Wars space combat represented in video games.
